The Rise of Rocco Repetto Taylor

The A-List Magazine copywriter, Juliet McNelly, speaks with rising golf star Rocco Repetto Taylor about his remarkable arrival onto the international golfing scene—one that has unfolded with unusual speed, yet is grounded in years of quiet progression.

“I turned pro without having a status,” Rocco reflects, speaking from a hotel room in Cape Town, where he is taking advantage of valuable practice time. The curtains are drawn, the tone calm. “It’s a little more restful,” he admits, though the past twelve months suggest anything but.

Until recently, Rocco was largely unknown in the world of elite golf. That changed dramatically in 2025. His breakthrough came with victory at the Challenge de Cádiz on the HotelPlanner Tour—a defining moment that not only elevated his profile but also secured his progression. By November of that same year, he had earned his place on the DP World Tour, stepping into a level of competition many spend years trying to reach.

Early Life and Introduction to Golf

Before the recognition, the travel, and the intensity of professional sport, Rocco’s life was far more familiar. Growing up in Málaga, he spent his time like many teenagers—socialising with friends and attending Málaga CF matches.

Golf entered his life through family. His Italian father introduced him to the sport at the age of 12, taking him to amateur tournaments and nurturing an early connection to the game.

“He was always the one who brought me to the tournaments,” Rocco recalls.

At that stage, there was no clear sense that this would become a career. His development as a young player was steady rather than spectacular. He improved consistently, but without the early breakthrough that often defines junior prodigies.

The Turning Point

The shift from interest to ambition came later, shaped by both guidance and experience. At 16, coach Dani Colomar recognised potential in Rocco and began working with him to refine his technique.

“It wasn’t until my first year of college at 18 that I realised I wanted to become a pro golfer at the highest level,” he explains.

A defining moment followed in 2022 when he won the Copa de Andalucía.

“That tournament really helped me put things into perspective, especially how to win.”

Returning to Spain and Facing Uncertainty

After graduating from Oral Roberts University, Rocco returned to Spain with a clear plan: to compete on The Alps Tour. Yet, despite his progress, the path ahead was far from certain.

“There was a lot of uncertainty… not knowing whether I was going to be able to have a job or not in the next year.”

That changed when the Fairways & Greens Foundation stepped in, providing support at a critical moment.

“The Foundation was able to support me. I played my first pro event on the PGA Spain tour, and I won.”

Breakthrough Performances on Tour

Rocco’s early professional career has already been marked by moments that stand out even at the highest level.

At the La Cigale Golf Open in Tunisia, he achieved an albatross—one of the rarest feats in golf, shared by players such as Miguel Ángel Jiménez and Rafa Cabrera-Bello.

“That albatross shot is one of the craziest moments I’ve had on the golf course.”

His victory in Cádiz followed, sealed by a decisive final putt under pressure.

“I wasn’t even me anymore. I was completely locked in—so nervous.”

The Mental Side of the Game

While golf is often perceived as calm, the psychological demands are significant.

Rocco has worked closely with a sports psychologist to develop control and consistency under pressure.

“I do have moments where I get upset with myself, but I’m able to reel it back in.”

Meditation forms part of his routine, helping him manage nerves rather than eliminate them.

“I’m sure the top guys playing majors are feeling the same.”

Discipline and Preparation

Preparation is fundamental. Ahead of tournament days, Rocco begins his routine at least three hours before tee time.

“In Australia and Qatar, sometimes the alarm was going off at 2.30am.”

It is a lifestyle built on repetition, structure, and long-term consistency.

The Financial Reality of Professional Golf

The financial demands of professional golf are often overlooked.

Qualifying schools can cost around €4,000 before travel, while a full season on The Alps Tour can reach €30,000–€40,000.

“The only thing which gave me a lot of safety and security was knowing that someone was backing me financially.”

Sacrifice, Perspective and the Road Ahead

Pursuing a professional career has required significant sacrifice.

“Family trips, you name it, absolutely everything.”

Yet those sacrifices have shaped his outlook.

“Sports show you how to make sacrifices.”

Despite the demands, golf offers opportunities few careers can match—travel, experience, and exposure to the world.

“I’ve been to Rome six times, and I’ve never actually seen Rome.”

Looking ahead, Rocco’s ambitions are clear. He sees himself competing on the sport’s biggest stages, following in the footsteps of Seve Ballesteros and José María Olazábal.

“Every day I see it as more of a reality.”

But beyond titles, his goal remains grounded:

“To have a family and support them by doing what I love—playing golf.”
